The Death of Mashiah ben Yosef and Overcoming the Evil Urge. Zechariah 12 speaks about mourning over one who has been stabbed. One opinion refers this to Messiah son of Joseph who dies in the first battle against Jerusalem. We discuss Zechariah 12 and Zechariah 14 to show that the two battles described therein are not one and the same. Reference is also made to Christian applications of this chapter. The second opinion refers to the death of the evil inclination within the human psyche. We discuss what exactly this is and how humanity is meant to evolve to such a point where mental confusions and rationalizations will no longer be parts of the human psyche. This is the new covenant spoken of in Jeremiah 31 that comes about in the messianic era. We also discuss the need for personal discipline and practical steps how we can today begin to curb the evil impulse that provokes us to act in ways harmful to our own self-interests.
