The Fall of Jerusalem, Part 2. Yohanan Ben Zakkai and his plot with the head of the Zealot Sicarii party, his nephew Abba Sicra. We discuss who were these Zealots, and what was their place in Temple period Judaism. We also discuss the other groups of the day, the Pharisees and the Essenes. We learn that what we think are two different groups may not be as different as we think. We also discuss the historical Yeshu, his original “guardian” party and the real reasons, according to ancient midrashim, why there was such conflict between him and the Sages of the day. Reference is made of Prof. S.G.F. Brandon and his works on historical Christian origins. Mention is made between the “Passover Plot” and the later plot between Y.B.Z. And Abba Sicra. The Sages with prophetic insights forsaw the coming fall of Jerusalem, they knew they had to act for the sake of the future. Thus they chose Yavneh to salvage Torah. The Zealots instead trusted in their misguided faith. We see now, after the fact, who was right.
