Class #37 (1/30/13). Ayn Yaakov, Berakhot, Megilah (Finkel ed. Pages 34, 279). The Amidah Shemoneh Esrei Prayer, why we say it, what it means, Part 1. This lesson introduces us to the concept of collective prayer. We understand the need for collective prayer in light of the archetypes of the collective unconscious as discussed by Carl Jung, the Ari'zal and the Talmud. We read from RaMBaM, Laws of Prayer (1:4), how our Sages foresaw the need of collective Israel to have a unifying prayer through which the entire nation could be joined in praise and pray to God. This lesson discusses how and why the Amidah prayer came about. We also discuss the Amidah blessing by blessing up to the blessing Melekh Ohev Tzedaka U'mishpat. This is a good introduction into prayer and includes many peripheral laws associated with the Amidah.
