Judges 19-21. The Story of the Rape at Givah. Insights from Josephus. A story that is strange because of what it lacks, more than from what it contains. What is strangely absent are the names of any of the major participants. Only Pinhas, the High Priest is mentioned. A terrible civil war. 65,000+ left dead. An entire tribe almost wiped out. We have no clue as to who were the leaders of the people at this time, and who prosecuted the war. Although this is the last episode in the Book of Judges, this episode is one of the first to have happened during the Judges period. This episode speaks about immoral, verses moral, verses more immoral behavior. The author of Judges included this early story at the end of the book as a lesson and a warning against extremes of all kinds. When there is no center, extremes rule, to the harm of all.
