The message of the prophet: stay true to the message of freedom, or face the consequences of surrendering to enslavement of the mind. The period of Judges, was as Dickens said, “the best of times and the worst of times.” This was a period of testing the nation to see whether or not they were willing to live by a higher calling or fall back into being like everybody else, subject to the rise and fall of fortunes, instead of being subject to a Higher, invisible Hand that provides miraculous blessings. This chapter sets the tone for the entire book, a message is given, a challenge is made. This lesson is not an historical one, it is a psychological one and is as applicable to us today as it has been applicable in every generation since the times of these historical events. The message and challenge is still for us today, and this is what makes this lesson and the Book of Judges so important for us to learn.
